MOTHER’S DAY WEEKEND ACTION

Mothers Day is May 12. That weekend – Saturday May 11 and Sunday May 12 – HODG is celebrating mothers whose children are being held in LA's juvenile halls.  

Helen and I have met with and received permission from the Probation Dept to stand outside Los Padrinos and Barry J Nidorf facilities and hand out gift bags to mothers who are visiting their detained children AND to all the mothers who are working as probation officers those days.  

And whatever you're thinking, do not worry. We are collaborating and showing up with The AntiRecidivism Coalition (ARC). ARC is an incredible non profit that is dedicated to ending mass incarceration. What began as an annual camping trip to bring together a few dozen formerly incarcerated young people with positive mentors, is today a support and advocacy network of more than 1400 volunteers.

There are 2 parts to this Mothers’ Day action.  Part 1:  making the gift bags. and Part II: handing them out.  We have committed to 100 bags, and at least 10 people showing up.

Part I: MAKE/DONATE GIFT BAGS.  

We imagine many of you could have a lot of fun with this. Each bag should contain things moms typically appreciate.  In my bags I am putting: a candle, some good smelling hand lotion, lip balm, and some chocolate.  You can put in whatever you like into yours (no cash please.)

Cozy socks

You can either make your own bags – which is fun, especially if you do it with friends – or you can send us the stuff and Helen and I  can put together the bags for you.  Whichever you prefer.   The Deadline to drop off these bags is Thurs, May 9. 

Part II: HAND OUT GIFT BAGS

Visiting days are both Saturday and Sunday (depending on which unit the child is in.) We are showing up both days, at both facilities, 1pm - 3pm.  If you are intersted in doing this with Helen, the peeps at ARC and me, please fill out this SIGN UP SHEET and let us know which facility you’d like to go to, and which day.
