Annual Pajama Bags

Annual Pajama Bags for Alexandria House

Every Christmas, HODG delivers 50 “pajama bags” to the residents of Alexandria House — a transitional home for moms and kids who’ve had more than their share of hard days and nights.

Helen has been running  this action since…  well, she doesn’t remember, definitely before the pandemic so 7… 8 years!  And each year, it never fails to bring delight to the families there.

Here’s how this works:  If you want to participate, you’ll be matched with a current or former resident — women, men (the boys who grew up there!), and kids.  Your mission is to  build them a “pajama bag.”

Each bag should include:
-  A pair of pajamas
-  Slippers
-  A sheets + pillowcase set
-  A set of towels
-  Some folks have added a toy if it’s a child, or a journal, nice toiletries or chocolates, for the adults.  We leave it up to you!.

We will provide you with your friend's name, gender, age, bed size, favorite color, and sizes. Please err on the larger size if you are uncertain, too big is always better than too small.

Please put everything in a large holiday shopping bag, a fun reusable bin,  or new laundry bag– and write your residents name clearly on the outside, and inside too.

Deadline: MONDAY DECEMBER 15

Candy Cane Action at Home Depot

A Candy Cane Call Out at Home Depot

You know what we want for Christmas and Hanukkah and the Winter Solstice?! For Home Depot to stop allowing ICE to use their parking lots as hunting grounds!

Since that’s not something Santa can fit down the chimney, we’re going to have to do the work ourselves.  And we are going to have to do it in a language Home Depot understands: money.

So, on Sunday, Dec 21, 1-2 pm volunteers from HODG, ikar, TIOH, JPLA, and LAVoice will be handing out CANDY CANES at the Home Depot in Hollywood, and asking folks to buy their holiday hardware, Christmas trees and everything else at some place OTHER THAN Home Depot.  Each candy cane will have a list of nearby ALTERNATIVES – like Harbor Freight, Anawalts, Callahan’s (on Western) – tied to it.

The goal is for this to be a warm, gentle protest that welcomes people in and lets them know what they are supporting when they shop at Home Depot.

We’re also proud to support NDLON’s ICE Out of Home Depot Campaign and tool kit (see below) and urge you all to take a look at their suggestions of actions we can all take this week to stand with immigrant workers and families.

HODG Backyard Lunch Making

Sunday, Dec 28 from 10am - noon — we’re hosting our LAST HODG Backyard Lunch-Making Party of 2025. Because of the holiday week, Hollywood Food Coalition needs extra lunch bags to keep all of our partner orgs stocked. No one should go hungry just because it’s Christmas/NYE break.  So come help us crank out 300+ lunch bags for our fellow Angelenos and neighbors experiencing food insecurity.

Bring a friend, your kids, your mom, your neighbor, your coworker — whoever. The more hands, the more sandwiches, the more good.

Below is a link where you can sign up to bring an item or two.  If you aren’t in a position to bring anything, no worries.  Come anyway.  We always need people.  In fact, we could use help with:

-- Setting up / cleaning up
-- Decorating + labeling lunch bags
-- Stuffing each bag with all 6 items
-- Breaking down boxes for recycling
-- Keeping the stations moving smoothly
-- Loading finished bags into cars
-- Driving a batch over to HoFoCo (1511 Cassil Place)

Or honestly… just come hang out.  That part is always fun too.  Bottomline, let's do some good, and have some fun together.

Dia De La Virgen De Guadalupe: A Peace Vigil for Immigrants

Dec 12 is Day of the Virgin of Guadalupe.  A major Catholic celebration in Mexico, the day honors the Virgin Mary's miraculous appearance to a peasant, Juan Diego, where she asked him to build a church.  So it is a perfect day to gather in solidarity for immigrants who can't celebrate.

So many of our favorite immigrant-focused orgs -- CARACEN, CHIRLA, LAVoice -- along with our local unions (!!!!)  -- SEIU, UTLA, and United HERE -- are coming together for this peaceful, community-centered prayer service, procession and vigil "centered in peace, justice, and community care."

We will gathering downtown, walk a few blocks together, probably to the detention center or the federal building (that's what we've done before), and say some prayers for our immigrant neighbors.

I've been to a handful of these vigils and I always find them centering and yes, uplifting.  So if you are feeling "baffled" too -- by the cruelty, the apathy, and the helplessness -- this is salve.

Holiday Shabbat

Holiday Shabbat

HODG Holiday Shabbat

Next Friday, Dec 5th, we’re hosting a Holiday HODG Shabbat — and by “holiday,” we mean all of ’em. Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanza, Festivus, Solstice, whatever you celebrate (or don’t) — come as you are.

This one isn’t potluck. We’ve got dinner covered.  What we do want from you is a WHITE ELEPHANT GIFT to swap with someone else. Think silly, charming, weird, pragmatic, delightful — the kind of thing that makes someone laugh or say, “Wait… why do you have this?" or "OMG. I needed this!”

We are also doing a STOCKING STUFFER COLLECTION.  Bring small gifts -- new and unopened please -- that would make for a good stocking stuffer.  We are in the process of looking for an org to donate these to.  If you have an idea, please let us know.

So mark your calendar, bring your white elephant, your stocking stuffer, your people, and let’s wrap up the year the way we do best: together, fed, and having a good time.

Here are the White Elephant parameters:

We urge you not to buy anything for this. Find something of yours that you think someone else might love. A puzzle you’ve already done.  A book you loved.  A vase you’re bored with.

If you do want to buy something, $25 is the max you can spend.

– HODG is boycotting Target, Amazon and Home Depot this season, so please buy something at your local mom + pop store.

– Wrap your gift.  If you haven’t played the game before, it’s predicated on not knowing what the gift is.

Only folks who bring a gift can play.  So bring something.  It's fun.

Don’t stress.  This is just a game.

** For those of you who have never been to a HODG Shabbat, or any shabbat, this is an uber casual affair. You can wear your pajamas. Seriously.  Also, you don’t need to be Jewish to come. In fact, you don’t need to be anything, except your perfect, beautiful selves.  All area welcome so feel free to bring friends, parents, neighbors etc.

Get to Know Gubernatorial Candidate Betty Yee

Betty Yee is meeting with us this Thursday night.  I know she hasn’t gotten a ton of endorsements, and is not leading polls BUT… the way candidates are toppling – first Katie Porter, now rumor has it that Becerra is in trouble – come June,  Betty Yee and Villaraigosa may be the last ones standing!! Rather than wait until 2026, when you’ll have to pay big bucks to see her, and it will likely be in a crowded room, why not come over and meet her now, for free, with us?   I know it seems like the Governor’s Race is far off, but the primaries are only  6 months away.

This is not an endorsement, but rather an opportunity to meet the candidate in an intimate, informal setting.   So get out of bed, and come over.

HODG Community Meeting with Councilwoman Katy Yaroslavsky

I want HODG to have some sort of partnership with our local government.  It doesn't seem like much gets done locally, and maybe more would happen if we really were all in it together.  Helen and I recently met with Katy Y and shared our desire to collaborate on stuff.  For starters we wanted to meet with her more often.  Or if not her, then with her office.  Katy agreed. And so...

... This month is the first of what will hopefully be regular meetings with our councilmember and her peeps.  You're all invited to join.  Whether or not Katy represents you -- she doesn't rep me!! In fact, I'm one of Hugo's constituents.  But I think getting to know these folks, and the hardworking people in their offices might shed light on how we can make our city work better for everyone.

So please, all of you, come.  It's in person, at Katy's office.  I can't promise she will be there, but I think she will.  There is no "pre-set" agenda, so bring your questions.  Also bring your neighbors.

Maybe this is how this stuff works.   Katy needs to be a better councilmember.  AND we have to be better constituents!  Maybe this meeting will help us learn how!

Gratitude Shabbat

Mark your calendars, campers!  HODG Shabbat will be Friday, Nov 14.  It's going to be a POTLUCK and a GRATITUDE Shabbat, which seems right given that it's thanksgiving and all.  As part of that gratitude we are asking 2 things:

a. Bring Feminine Hygiene Supplies (tampons/pads) and new Backpacks.  These are for our young friends at My Friend's Place, which is a refuge in Hollywood for young people experiencing homelessness.  My Friend's place provides support, resources and most of all a loving community for vulnerable teens.

Note: wonderful Melissa V just texted that there are $5 backpacks at Target right now.  (For those who aren't boycotting Target for its DEI cuts)

b. Let's show gratitude for each other by bringing food to share.  You can make or buy whatever you like.  There is a sign up sheet so we can keep track.

c. I know, I said 2 things but I just thought of a third!  We always need help setting/cleaning up and helping to host shabbat.  If you are interested and would like to join our HODG Shabbat Team, please let us know by emailing Pegah at hangoutdogood@gmail.com. HODG Conversation with California Attorney General Rob Bonta (Zoom)

Wondering what our Attorney General has been up to?  Or even what an Attorney General does?  Me too!!  Which is why I am so grateful to Sarah T for arranging this virtual conversation with Californai's AG Rob Bonta.

I've actually met Bonta before. He is a wonderfully nice guy, and he has done a lot to position California as a defender of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness!  Under Bonta, California has filed multiple lawsuits challenging our scary-as-hell federal government,, and he is not afraid to investigate anyone who is breaking the law.  From what little I know and understand -- and it's very very little -- Bonta is a guy worth getting to know, which you can do on this zoom with us.

** There will be a Q + A where you can ask your concise and specific questions.

The Regional Center in Koreatown is a non-profit devoted to individuals with developmental disabilities and their families. The Regional Center is supplying turkeys for 25 low income families so they can celebrate Thanksgiving. The Center asked HODG to help in supplying the rest of the fixings.  They've asked that we put together boxes.  Each box should contain:

Cranberry sauce
String beans
Candied yams
Canned gravy
Boxed stuffing

The box should then be delivered to the Immanuel Presbyterian Church in Koreatown before Nov 8th!  Look, I know the need everywhere is so huge, but this is one small way you can make a difference.

Food Drive

Our partners at Hollywood Food Coalition are getting ready for an increased need for their services.  hat's why they have put out a call for non-perishable items at the following time and location:

Date: Tuesday, November 4th
Time: 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM
Location: 1223 Vine Street, Hollywood

Below is the list of recommended Items (e.g., proteins, hearty soups, whole grains) to help you choose the most needed goods.  As always, you don't need to get them all.

Note:
-Please make sure items are not expired
-Cans should be 32 ounces or less
-These items should be individual servings
-It’s best for the canned goods to have pop-tops

ALSO FYI --- HoFoCo has put out an URGENT request for volunteers. They really need help with sorting and organizing the canned goods before they are distributed.  If you are available to lend a hand, please join them for the sorting shift:  1pm - 3pm Tuesday, Nov 4.  To volunteer, email erin.lovelace@hofoco.org so they can get a headcount.

Another FYI from HoFoCo --  The Sunday Lunch Bag Project is receiving an influx of loose sandwiches from local community groups, nonprofits, and businesses. They appreciate this extra volume, however, the additional sandwiches mean there is a need for items to go into the lunch bags to accompany these sandwiches. Donations of salty snacks (chips), granola/power bars, something sweet (Yes, we will take your leftover Halloween candy!), and applesauce pouches are highly appreciated. No need to bag these items - HOFOCO does this on site with volunteers every Sunday. If you do create snack bags, please label them PBJ as this is the most popular sandwich flavor coming our way. Dates we particularly need snack drop-offs: Nov 2, Nov 9, Nov 16 and Nov 23.

No thrones. No crowns.  No Kings.  October 18 is another day of nonviolent opposition to the Trump administrations authoritarian power grabs.  There will be protests across the city.

I can't quite tell yet from the maps where or when the protest will begin in DTLA.  I assume 10am, at City Hall, similar to last time.  So for now the plan is to meet up at my house at 9:30am -- this time may change depending on if any more info comes out.  Then, like last time We will all then walk one block to the Metro Bus #14 stop on Van Ness and Beverly, and all get on the bus together.

Wear your "No Kings" shirt!  If you didn't get one last time, I had more made, so hopefully you'll get one this time. (first come, first serve)

And to make things even better – these signs are for PROP 50. We’ll gather at Becky’s house in Los Feliz, enjoy some coffee and breakfast pastries and color some beautiful signs that you can put in a front yard or a home or car window and let your neighbors know that you are voting YES on PROP 50, and so should they!

Here’s what you need to know:

  2. You make lunches at home.

  3. Most folks make about 10 lunches, but you can make as many or as few as you like.

  5. Be generous. This is the only meal these folks get all day.

  6. Lunches should contain at least 7 items:

    • A drink (water, Capri sun, soda)

    • Sandwich (PB+J, Turkey, Ham + Cheese are most common)

    • Potato Chips (individually packaged)

    • Fruit (oranges, apple sauce, bananas. No apples: too hard on teeth)

    • Cookies (individually packaged)

    • A  snack (beef jerky, granola bar, nuts, etc.)

  8. Some people decorate their bags. Not required but much appreciated.

Ballots Over Broadway

Ballots Over Broadway

This is definitely not the first Ballots over Broadway. In fact, this is the 7th installment. All have been organized/produced by the amazing Jessica Stamen. All have happened in the Norton backyard.

To those who've been before: you know how magical this event is, and that you can't miss it.

For those who haven’t: this is an evening of wild talent and you should run, not walk, to it. Literally, each and every one of the performers Jessica enlists – most of whom you'll know from TV, Broadway, etc –  will blow you away.  It’s funny, it’s uplifting, it’s not to be missed.

Chris Mann is returning as the hilarious host, and as always, proceeds from  ticket sales go to Democrashe, a non-profit dedicated to supporting young women to become the next generation of inspiring leaders.

Postcarding for Prop 50

Postcarding for Prop 50

It's all about Prop 50, folks. Our last ditch effort to have a chance at winning back the house, and our country, in 2026.  The Election is Nov 4, 2026.  Mail in ballots will go out next month. So we don’t have a lot of time.

(For those who don’t know, Prop 50 allows California to redraw our congressional district maps starting in 2026 until 2030.  It is a response by Governor Newsom to the Republican redistricting that’s happened in Texas – and soon to happen in other states – which will increase the number of Republican majority districts.)

HODG will be doing whatever it takes to make sure Prop 50 passes.  This is no slam dunk.  Polls show that if asked today only 30+% of CA Dems would vote yes.  When educated about why we are doing it that percentage goes up to 50+%.  That means we have to start talking to every Dem we know about why Prop 50 is important.

To get this ball rolling, please join one – or all – of these upcoming actions, and be on the lookout for much more!

HODG Shabbat

HODG Shabbat

Yep, this is happening on Friday. You haven't heard much about it because our plans keep changing.  Initially, we wanted to have a sing-along campfire but it didn’t seem like many people were up for that.  Maybe it's a little tone deaf -- pun totally intended!! --  for us all to be singing when there's so much pain in the world. I don't know if that's right, but that's how it's been feeling. Anyway, we moved off of that onto a night about Prop 50, but we struggled to land a speaker/cheerleader who was worthy of you all. I guess high self-esteem, at least in the face of politicians. So, this is the first HODG Shabbat without a plan. Let's see how it goes.

HODG Shabbat

An Evening for Justice

An Evening for Justice

Masked ICE agents kidnapping people off our streets. Nothing has been upsetting me more.  I am sure you feel the same and want to do something. One thing you can do is support orgs that are fighting back.

In the courts.

Caracen is the largest Central American advocacy org in the country.  They provide no - and low cost legal representation for immigrants, advocate for sensible immigrant policies, and fight for the rights of all immigrants in this country.

A group of passionate, very organized neighbors – they aren’t all HODG members but they will be soon, I hope – are hosting this gathering on Norton. The goal is to raise friends and funds for Caracen. This is the first time we have done anything with Caracen, so we are learning too!

You don't need to donate -- though of course they'd love it -- but either way the most important thing is to come and learn about the work this org is doing, enjoy some food, and engage in meaningful fellowship.  That is how we beat those masked men – by sticking together! (They depend on us doing the opposite)
