HODG Backyard Lunch Making

We’re hosting another Backyard Lunch Making session!

Bring a friend, your kids, your mom, your neighbor, your coworker — whoever. The more hands, the more sandwiches, the more good.

Below is a link where you can sign up to bring an item or two.  If you aren’t in a position to bring anything, no worries.  Come anyway.  We always need people.  In fact, we could use help with:

-- Setting up / cleaning up
-- Decorating + labeling lunch bags
-- Stuffing each bag with all 6 items
-- Breaking down boxes for recycling
-- Keeping the stations moving smoothly
-- Loading finished bags into cars
-- Driving a batch over to HoFoCo (1511 Cassil Place)

Or honestly… just come hang out. That part is always fun too.

Bottomline, let's do some good, and have some fun together.

Socks, Sweatshirt, Blanket Drive

Socks, Sweatshirts + Solidarity

Andrea R's been doing ICE patrol regularly with IDEPSCA and is available to chat with anyone who's curious about that ( ** email her at andrea.rothschild@gmail.com.). She shared the other day that an unhoused day laborer at Home Depot lost everything in the recent rains/flooding. His community's coming together to get him new blankets, sweaters, etc. but the man’s plight inspired AR to notice how cold it’s been, and how most of the laborers are NOT dressed for the weather.

So, she asked that HODG organize + promote –

A Socks-Sweatshirt-Warm Clothes Drive for Day Laborers

Here are the few rules:

  • Socks, sweatshirts, jackets, blankets only.  (not an opportunity to get rid of your spring/summer stuff)

  • Men's only

  • Socks must be NEW.  (sorry, no one wants our dirty socks!)

  • All else can be gently used but damn, it would be nice to get these guys something new.  But whatever works for you.

  • Sweatshirts, jackets should be LARGE.

These men have come here to participate in the American project – like so many of our relatives did – the least we can do is make sure they don’t freeze while doing it.

Mens Socks-Sweatshirts-Blanket Drive
For Day Laborers

Deadline: Thurs, March 5

Drop off or send to

Target Boycott

Target Boycott

A Targeted Action Against Target (+ Home Depot)

This peaceful action is a collaboration of HODG, LAVoice, iKar and TIOH.  This coming Sunday these 4 orgs are showing up at Target.  The goal is to make sure that shoppers there know that Target allows ICE to use its parking lots as staging areas, and does not protect its employees from being kidnapped at work.

Masked agents have gone into Target stores, pinned employees to the ground, and then stole them away.  Many of these employees are "literally US citizens."  Target has not made any public response, and as we are all learning, silence is a form of consent.

We will be standing outside of Target, handing out flyers to let shoppers know that there are better alternatives nearby.  After Target, any one who wants can walk across the street to Home Depot, where Civic Sundays is holding a protest 3-4pm.

Our protest will be peaceful.  We will not be screaming at shoppers, but rather inviting them into this boycott.

Join HODG + LAVoice + iKar + TIOH for
A Targeted Action Against Target

Sunday, Feb 22
2pm - 3pm

Meet in Front of Target
5500 Sunset Blvd

All are welcome.
This will be a peaceful operation!

(I got a bunch of heart lollipops to hand out.)

This small action is part of a bigger movement that is happening all across LA where communities are organizing their own boycotts.  If you are interested in doing that, or if you want to learn more about this movement, LAVoice is offering a training session on Tues, Feb 17 at 5:30 - 7pm.

This is NOT mandatory, but is a great opportunity to learn how to run these kind of actions with your own friends, orgs, neighbors etc.  (* LAVoice is a faith-based org, so there will be some "faith forward messaging."  I am not a religious person at all, but for many of the communities we are working with, religion is foundational and serves as a way to connect.

Zoom: What's Actually Recyclable?

What’s Actually Recyclable? A Zoom with a recycling expert!

I'm beyond thrilled about this one. Truly. I have approximately a zillion questions about recycling. And you do too — I know this because I’ve watched many of you stand frozen at the trash cans at my house, waste in hand, whispering: Is this recyclable? What about this cup? Will I not be invited back if I get this wrong?

Good news: no more squinting at tiny numbers on the bottom of plastic containers. No more recycling anxiety spirals.

Because — drumroll please — Kreigh Hampel is hopping on Zoom with us.

Kreigh spent 17 years with the City of Burbank as their Recycling Coordinator, which means he knows the difference between recyclable and wish-cycling, between helpful and actively ruining the whole system. He’s the person you want in your corner when you’re holding a greasy pizza box and feeling judged by society.

He’s going to tell us what is actually recycled, how to recycle in an apartment, and how to recycle better without losing our minds.

Come curious. Come confused. Come ready to finally stop apologizing to the blue bin.

** Please bring to the zoom ONE Item that causes you recycling anxiety.  Kreigh will help you out.

*** Thank you Lisa R for making this happen!

HODG Newcomer Breakfast

HODG Newcomer Breakfast

This is an opportunity for everyone to feel more comfortable about being a member of HODG.

We know there is so much going on, it can be intimidating.  We know it can seem like we've all known each other forever -- we haven't!.  We know walking into a room of strangers can be terrifying.  That's what this meeting is for.  To make sure you never feel any of that again.

And fyi: Newcomer means whatever you want it to mean.  It could mean I've been getting the newsletter for years but have never been to an actual event.  Or I just signed up and barely know what HODG is.  Or I've been to a few events and just don't feel comfortable.

The 1.5 hour in-person meeting will include us going over everything we've got going on, but we'll also have time to hear from you: what you are interested in, what you are not interested etc.  And, of course, there will be good food and coffee!

The last time we did a newcomer breakfast, it was a huge success.  Many of the attendees finally felt comfortable showing up to HODG events -- and are now regulars!  So please, if you are new to us, or just an introvert, please come spend a slice of time -- and a bagel -- with us.

Meet + Greet with Abdul El-Sayed, candidate for US Senate in Michigan

Meet + Greet with Abdul El-Sayed, candidate for US Senate in Michigan

Ok so, Michigan’s current U.S. Senator, Dem Gary Peters, announced that he will not seek re-election in 2026. This means the seat he holds will be open, and because Michigan is Michigan -- a state that narrowly voted for Bitch Baby in '24 -- and the Senate is at a 53 R - 47 Dem split, the stakes are high.

There are 3 Dems who have already thrown their hats in the ring:  Haley Stevens (US Congress Member),  Mallory McMorrow (State Senator) and physician, epidemiologist, and public health leader, Abdul El-Sayed

The Timberman-Redlichs are hosting an event in support of Abdul El-Sayed.  They will be joined by co-hosts Jon Favreau and Jon Lovett of the Pod Save America podcast, and singer-songwriter Harper Simon

This in-person event is a chance to hear directly from Abdul El-Sayed about his vision and what he thinks it will take for Democrats to deliver real wins for working people. You will also have the opportunity to ask questions -- which I hope you do --  and be part of an honest, specific conversation about where our politics need to go next.

Discussion with Max Huntsman, former Inspector General of LA County

Inspector General?! Jeez, can you get less sexy?

Turns out that's part of the plan. The-powers-that-be give these jobs the most boring titles  in the hopes that no one pays attention.  Sadly, it's a tactic that always works.

Except here.  Because we at HODG are paying attention and we know that Max Huntsman just resigned -- after 12 years -- as our Inspector General in December.  Why?  Well, here's the letter he wrote explaining: https://www.scribd.com/document/964342925/Inspector-General-Max-Huntsman-s-Retirement-Letter

Not good.  Basically, he was appointed in 2013 to oversee the Sheriff's Department and left because every reform he tried to implement was blocked, every finding ignored.  Especially by  former-Chief-but-still-a-piece-of-shit, Alex Villanueva.

We asked Max Huntsman to join us on zoom because unlike almost everyone else we know, WE ARE CURIOUS.  We want to hear what he has to say about the Office of Inspector General (OIG), about the Sheriff's Department, about the County etc.

If you're curious too, and you should be, come join.

HODG & LA Voice Home Depot Boycott

HODG & LA Voice Home Depot Boycott

Before the holidays, HODG, ikar, TIOH and LAVoice collaborated on a "candy cane action" at Home Depot in Hollywood. It was a huge success. And super fun.

We had 50 leaders who talked to over 200 customers in less than an hour, persuading (at least) 10 customers to turn around and go somewhere else (we provided nearby alternatives).  There were many more who said thank you for what you are doing.

It was so fun, and so successful that WE ARE DOING AGAIN.  (This time we are adding Target, which is just across the street, into the mix).

Not with the candy-cane theme, obviously, but we will be handing something out and asking people to spend their hard earned dollars at a store that doesn't help ICE kidnap innocent neighbors.

Just because it's a new year, doesn't mean the Trump administration isn't up to its same old cruelty and fear tactics.  Don't stand by.  Come join us in a peaceful -- dare I say, joyful -- action of solidarity and humanity.

Street Clean Up

Street Clean Up

A couple weekends ago I met an online hero of mine: Juan Naula, who has built an incredible community that is devoted to...

Cleaning up the trash on our streets.

@CleanLAwithME has 57,000 followers.  You should definitely follow and see how he is single-handedly cleaning up our city.  Well, it's not single-handed anymore.

HODG is joining Juan on Jan 3rd in Hollywood (on the corner of Vermont and Beverly, at the sadly trash-covered metro stop).  Juan has gloves and bags for us -- though you can bring your own.

Juan calls his clean up sessions mingas, which in his country of birth, Ecuador, means traditional, communal, voluntary work for the common good.

One warning -- since my time with Juan, I haven't been able to stop picking up the trash!!

So please mark your calendars!  A minga awaits!

HODG Backyard Lunch Making

Sunday, Dec 28 from 10am - noon — we’re hosting our LAST HODG Backyard Lunch-Making Party of 2025. Because of the holiday week, Hollywood Food Coalition needs extra lunch bags to keep all of our partner orgs stocked. No one should go hungry just because it’s Christmas/NYE break.  So come help us crank out 300+ lunch bags for our fellow Angelenos and neighbors experiencing food insecurity.

Candy Cane Action at Home Depot

A Candy Cane Call Out at Home Depot

You know what we want for Christmas and Hanukkah and the Winter Solstice?! For Home Depot to stop allowing ICE to use their parking lots as hunting grounds!

Since that’s not something Santa can fit down the chimney, we’re going to have to do the work ourselves.  And we are going to have to do it in a language Home Depot understands: money.

So, on Sunday, Dec 21, 1-2 pm volunteers from HODG, ikar, TIOH, JPLA, and LAVoice will be handing out CANDY CANES at the Home Depot in Hollywood, and asking folks to buy their holiday hardware, Christmas trees and everything else at some place OTHER THAN Home Depot.  Each candy cane will have a list of nearby ALTERNATIVES – like Harbor Freight, Anawalts, Callahan’s (on Western) – tied to it.

The goal is for this to be a warm, gentle protest that welcomes people in and lets them know what they are supporting when they shop at Home Depot.

We’re also proud to support NDLON’s ICE Out of Home Depot Campaign and tool kit (see below) and urge you all to take a look at their suggestions of actions we can all take this week to stand with immigrant workers and families.

Tis The Season to Protect Our Neighbors

JPLA + LAVoice)

Sunday, Dec 21

1pm - 2pm

**no posters or signs**

(we are going for a different not-in-your-face vibe).

Annual Pajama Bags

Annual Pajama Bags for Alexandria House

Every Christmas, HODG delivers 50 “pajama bags” to the residents of Alexandria House — a transitional home for moms and kids who’ve had more than their share of hard days and nights.

Helen has been running  this action since…  well, she doesn’t remember, definitely before the pandemic so 7… 8 years!  And each year, it never fails to bring delight to the families there.

Here’s how this works:  If you want to participate, you’ll be matched with a current or former resident — women, men (the boys who grew up there!), and kids.  Your mission is to  build them a “pajama bag.”

Each bag should include:
-  A pair of pajamas
-  Slippers
-  A sheets + pillowcase set
-  A set of towels
-  Some folks have added a toy if it’s a child, or a journal, nice toiletries or chocolates, for the adults.  We leave it up to you!.

We will provide you with your friend's name, gender, age, bed size, favorite color, and sizes. Please err on the larger size if you are uncertain, too big is always better than too small.

Please put everything in a large holiday shopping bag, a fun reusable bin,  or new laundry bag– and write your residents name clearly on the outside, and inside too.

Sunday Lunch Drive

WELCOME TO THE SUNDAY LUNCH DRIVE

Thank you so much for joining us in helping feed our neighbors.

Here’s what you need to know:

  1. The lunch drive happens every Sunday morning. Rain or shine.

  2. You make lunches at home.

  3. Most folks make about 10 lunches, but you can make as many or as few as you like.

  4. Label the bag with the type of sandwich (this is important and gives the recipients a choice.)

  5. Be generous. This is the only meal these folks get all day.

  6. Lunches should contain at least 7 items:

    • A drink (water, Capri sun, soda)

    • Sandwich (PB+J, Turkey, Ham + Cheese are most common)

    • Potato Chips (individually packaged)

    • Fruit (oranges, apple sauce, bananas. No apples: too hard on teeth)

    • Cookies (individually packaged)

    • A  snack (beef jerky, granola bar, nuts, etc.)

  7. No Glass

  8. Some people decorate their bags. Not required but much appreciated.

  9. Drop your lunches off at one of the locations:

Visit the HODG Lunch Drive page for more info!
