Dia De La Virgen De Guadalupe: A Peace Vigil for Immigrants
Dec 12 is Day of the Virgin of Guadalupe. A major Catholic celebration in Mexico, the day honors the Virgin Mary's miraculous appearance to a peasant, Juan Diego, where she asked him to build a church. So it is a perfect day to gather in solidarity for immigrants who can't celebrate.
So many of our favorite immigrant-focused orgs -- CARACEN, CHIRLA, LAVoice -- along with our local unions (!!!!) -- SEIU, UTLA, and United HERE -- are coming together for this peaceful, community-centered prayer service, procession and vigil "centered in peace, justice, and community care."
We will gathering downtown, walk a few blocks together, probably to the detention center or the federal building (that's what we've done before), and say some prayers for our immigrant neighbors.
I've been to a handful of these vigils and I always find them centering and yes, uplifting. So if you are feeling "baffled" too -- by the cruelty, the apathy, and the helplessness -- this is salve.
